Chapter 3

“Hey,” he said as he closed the door behind him.

Imani looked around the room as if there was chance that he was talking to someone besides her.

“Them sedatives knocked you out,” he told her as he sat down. “You wouldn’t let the doctors do what they needed to so they put you to sleep.”

As she watched him, sitting beside her bed and talking like he hadn’t shot her, Imani didn’t know what to say to Santiago. She didn’t really have any words for him. She wanted to kill him.

“Where is my money, Santiago?”

“Baby, it’s put up.”

“Baby? Put up? Why the fuck you talkin’ to me like you didn’t shoot me in the damn back?”

“That was an accident. I just… I was mad and sad and I ain’t want you to leave me.”

“So you tried to kill me?”

“I was wrong, I admit that but—”

“Miss Wilcox,” a tall, thin man said as he walked into the room. “I’m Dr. Wilshire and I’m glad to see that you’re awake.”

“When can I go home?”

“In a couple of days, hopefully. We just want to make sure that you don’t get an infection and make sure that everything is healing properly. You were very lucky that the bullet went right through and didn’t hit any of your organs. The thoracotomy tube will be taken out today.”

“Lucky, huh?” Imani scoffed.

“Yeah. You just rest for the next few days.”

Imani nodded her head.

“Well, you call the nurse if you need anything.” Dr. Wilshire said before he left the room.

“You was dead ass wrong and if I have it my way you’ll just be dead soon,” Imani said as soon as the door had clicked shut.

“My brother was dead on my bedroom floor and you picked money over me. What the fuck did you expect me to do?”

“Where is my money?” she asked again.

“I put it up.”

“Go and get it.”

“I’m sorry, baby. I really do love you and—”

“You show it by tryin’ to kill me? Save the bullshit and get my fuckin’ money!”

“Can you hear me out for a minute?” he asked, exasperated.

“No! I loved you, I trusted you. I tried to stop Darius from shootin’ Sergio and you fuckin’ shot me.”

Imani was trying not to cry but she couldn’t help it. Her feelings were genuinely hurt. She had been fool enough to think that she had found something special in Santiago. She had actually thought that they’d be together forever.

“I still love you,” Santiago said as he moved in closer to her.

“What-the-fuck-ever. If that’s love I don’t want nothin’ to do wit’ it.”

“Love ain’t perfect, Imani, and neither am I. I made a mistake but I wanna make it up to you.”

“Then bring me my money.”

Santiago nodded as he stood up. He leaned in and kissed her forehead before he left.
